Bertha M. Squires

Bertha M. Squires, age 94, went to be with her Lord on Thursday February 9th. She was born in 1918 in Houma, LA and raised at the MacDonell Children’s Home after her mother’s death in the Flu Pandemic of 1918. She moved to GA at age 18 and married Milton W. Squires. She spent the greater part of her life in the Oostanaula Community and ran the Oostanaula Grocery for a number of years. She served as a Cub Scout Leader for Troop 13 and faithfully supported the Liberty Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Liberty Road where she was an Elder, taught Sunday School, played the piano and parked cars for special fairground events. Family members who preceded her in death are her parents Klebert Felicien Martin and Cornelia Rodrigue Martin, sister Yvonne L. Martin all of Houma, LA; husband Milton W. Squires, Sr., sons Nathan K. Squires and Martin C. Squires all of Calhoun and daughter in law Sherry J. Squires of Irmo, SC; brothers Glaise J. and Julius L. Martin of Houma, LA, Houston E. Martin of Alexandra, LA, Hilias W. Martin of Cornelia, GA; and step brothers Sam and Alan Martin of Houma, LA. She is survived by her children, M. Ward (Betty) Squires, Jr. of Irmo, SC, Sylvia E. (George) Britt of Birmingham, AL, James E. (Teresa) Squires, and Cleo Y. (Cris) Childers, and daughter in law Gail N. Squires all of Calhoun, step sister Olga Martin LeBoeuf of Kemper, TX, step brother Dave (Beatrice) Martin of Modesto, CA and Brittany, France. Fifteen grandchildren- Tracy (Mica) Squires of Lexington, SC, Roger (Angel) of Fuquay Varina, NC, Rodney (Susan) Squires, Robyn (Greg) Williams, Timothy (Lisa) Childers, Duaron (Holli) Childers, Alan (April) Squires, and Rhelda (Robbie) Young all of Calhoun, GA, Frank (Candy) Sturgill, Sarah Mason of Resaca, GA, Jason and Laura Britt of Birmingham, AL, Catherine Britt of Jackson, WY, Robbie (Tina) Sturgill and Michael (Cynthia) Sturgill of Tupelo, MS. Fourteen great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews also survive. The family expresses gratitude to the staff at the Gordon Health and Rehabilitation Center for their kind, loving and thoughtful care during the past year. Funeral services will be conducted for Bertha Louise Martin Squires on Saturday February 11th at 2pm from the chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with the Rev. Phillip Layne. Interment will be in Fain Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as Pallbearers. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 4 until 7pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flower, the family requests that donations be made to the MacDonell United Methodist Children’s Services, 8326 Main Street, Houma, LA 70363 or to the Liberty Cumberland Presbyterian Church, PO Box 2287, Calhoun, GA 30703.
