Barry Wesley Wright, 75, a longtime resident of Calhoun, Georgia, passed away Tuesday morning February 7th at his residence.
He was born in Calhoun on August 31, 1947, son of the late Samuel Wesley Wright and Helen June Gentry Wright.
He was a graduate of Calhoun High School, received a Bachelor’s Degree from Berry College, and a Master’s Degree from the University of West Georgia. He taught school for many years in Gordon County. Barry was retired from Lockheed Martin Corporation and had previously worked at General Dynamics’ Electric Boat Division. He was a licensed Amateur Radio Operator for 63 years and enjoyed using Morse Code for communications. Barry was a charter member of the Cherokee Capital Amateur Radio Society.
He served on the Gordon County Board of Education from 1988-2000. He was Chairman of the Board for ten of those years. Barry was an active member of the “Get Up and Go” Parkinson’s Group at Advent Redmond Hospital in Rome, Georgia.
Barry was a member of New Echota United Methodist Church where he served as church treasurer for more than 20 years.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Edna Mae Wright, his daughter, Sabrina Wright Framptom, son-in-law Joe Framptom, grandson, Sam of Little Rock, Arkansas, his son, Shea Wright, daughter-in-law, Kiersa Benson-Wright, and grandchildren Finley and Edie of Port Angeles, Washington. He is also survived by his sister, Suzanne Wright Kirkhuff, of Huntsville, Alabama, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday February 11th at 3 p.m. from the chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with Pastors Vincent Moreno and Keith Willard officiating. Interment will follow in Fain Cemetery.
Pallbearers serving include Jackie Burns, Cale Curtis, Darrel Geving, Steve Moore, Bob Pearce, and Dempsey Wright. Honorary pallbearers are the Parkinson’s Get/Up and Go Group, Michael Bryson, Jerry Casey, Gary Copley, Harold Dale, Bobby Hall, Tim Haney, Johnny Owens, Phil Robbins, Daryl Smallwood, Gary Stewart, Michael Thompson, Richard Wynn, and J.D. Zapp.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 until 8pm at the funeral home.
