Anita Scoggins Garren, 93, of Calhoun, Georgia and Charlottesville, Virginia, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, November 21, 2014, at Hospice of the Piedmont’s Hospice House.
Born April 22, 1921 in Pine Log, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Julian and Eula Scoggins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence D. Garren.
Anita will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She had a sweet, caring and kind disposition, with an endearing feisty, independent and occasionally opinionated streak. She was blessed with a long life, healthy in mind and body, until the decline that led to her death. With her husband, she was a founding and active member of Belmont Baptist Church in Calhoun. She also worked for many years in the Auxiliary of the Rural Letter Carriers Association.
Anita was survived by her son, Lamar, and his wife Deborah, of Charlottesville, Virginia; her daughter, Melinda Chou and her husband, Ernest, of Houston, Texas; and her three granddaughters, Jordan of Falls Church, Virginia, Emma of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Grace of Arlington, Virginia. She was also survived by two of her brothers, Darrell and Bill Scoggins, both of Calhoun, Georgia, as well as many nieces, nephews and their families.
The family wants to express gratitude to the residents and staff of the Branchlands retirement community in Charlottesville where Anita had lived for the last 10 years. She was able to live independently and happily there, and made many good friends. The family is also grateful to the staff of Hospice House who cared for Anita in the last week of her life and made her final days comfortable and peaceful.
